LTO FEATURES
What does a lithium titanate battery look like?
In the LTO battery, lithium titanate oxide (Li2TiO3) replaces graphite (carbon) in the anode, which is present in the typical lithium-ion battery instead. The cathode to match can be lithium manganese oxide (LMO) or with added cobalt (NMC).
The LTO under the microscope shows a three-dimensional structure formed by lithium titanate nanocrystals. The cell voltage is 2.4 V, it can undergo rapid charging and can withstand a discharge current of 10 times the rated capacity.
BENEFITS
The advantages related to the new lithium titanate battery technology are that the anode surface area of the lithium titanate battery is about 100 square meters per gram instead of only 3 square meters per gram of the classical lithium ion batteries(3.7v). This greater surface area offered to the passage of electrons allows for fast charging and longer battery life. This means that less charging power is required and these batteries can be safely recharged in about 6 to 10 minutes instead of the 8 hours required for other rechargeable batteries. In addition, the charging efficiency exceeds 98%.
RISKS
The lower operating voltage (2.3v) compared to conventional lithium cells (3.7v) is an advantage for both safety and the environment. The absence of carbon prevents thermal instability and overheating, which are the main cause of fires in traditional storage systems. From tests conducted, verifiable by every LTO manufacturer in the world, an LTO cell subjected to a short circuit reached a maximum temperature of 90-100° C, without causing explosions or fires to which conventional lithium-polymer batteries can be subjected.
